Memory Foam Mattress Development

Is a foam bed topper the answer to getting a good nights rest? If you cannot sleep at nighttime then get up in the morning with stiff joints and an aching back, a mattress topper could be the answer to a restful, pain-free nights sleep.

Getting a comfortable, restful, pain-free night's rest is right at the top of the list for almost everyone.

And yet it is something that seems to elude everyone, at least on occasion, except those people who have been fortunate enough to have found a memory foam mattress A queen or king memory foam mattress is the one possession that most owners would never willingly give up.

The rest of us keep waking up in the morning, and often in the middle of the night, with sore backs, neck pain, hips that we know will never bend again, and feeling about as rested as if we had stayed awake for 48 hours straight.

If you fit into this category, take heart. This does not have to describe you any longer.

People in many countries are enjoying sleep of a dreamlike quality because of this modern miracle product that really was not designed to provide consumer comfort at all. Most of us readily call to mind electronics and exotic metals when we think of consumer products that were developed as a result of space research and exploration. A mattress does not come to mind at all.

But that really is where it originated. Memory foam had its start in the space industry. In fact, the material in a king memory foam mattress is very similar to the foam that protects our astronauts.

This came about because NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) started a program in 1971 to find some way to relieve the stress of the G-force experienced during lift-off by the space shuttle astronauts and to cushion cockpit seats to enhance survivability in the event accident.

A viscoelastic pressure relieving foam material was developed from this research and development. The material proved stable, durable and commercially feasible. Rights to produce a commercial product were acquired by a Swedish firm, Fagerdala World Foams.

It took Fagerdala several years to perfect the product before they introduced a consumer version of the foam which the names "Tempur". The foam product proved to be ideal for use in mattresses and Fagerdala introduced their ‘Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress’ in 1991.

The brand was introduced in the United States through Tempur-Pedic, Inc., a partnership of Fagerdala Vice President Mikael Magnuson and several business associates in 1992.

Nine distributors of Fagerdala, including Tempur-Pedic, Inc., merged in 1999 to form Tempur World holding company. In 2002, private-equity firms TA Associates, Boston,MA, and Friedman, Fleischer, & Lowe, San Francisco, CA, bought the holding company. They retained Trussell as the company’s CEO.  In 2002, the firms reformed Tempur World holding company to Tempur-Pedic International Inc. went public on December 18, 2003, according to Business First reports.

Tempur-Pedic products are carried today by many high end specialty stores in addition to bedding and specialty stores. They do a good job of direct marketing by appealing to buyers emotions and the normal consumer desire to always have something better.

Mattresses made of Tempur material have received awards from both Consumer's Digest and Good Housekeeping. The Arthritis Foundation has also given them an Ease-of-Use Commendation.

Memory foam might have been developed by NASA for use in the space shuttle but it did not take long for other viable uses of it to become apparent. Its use with medical patients was only one of these new applications.

It became apparent that memory foam could potentially prevent patients from developing bedsores. They realized this after studying memory foam's unique ability to spread pressure away from the body. This substantially decreased the amount of pressure felt by the patient.

It was further noticed that not only did the memory foam help prevent patients from developing bedsores, it was instrumental in aiding many other conditions as well. Through  spreading the pressure of the reclining body it was able to relieve many patients of chronic back issues.

The improved health benefits from memory foam did not stop with the physical. It proved to be one of the most comfortable sleeping materials many patients have ever slept on. With improved and more restful sleep came many improved ancillary benefits.

It did not take long for other companies looking at the Tempur-Pedic success to develop similar materials of their own. Some of these are just not up to the same quality but some are actually seen by consumers as being better - and a great deal cheaper than Tempur-Pedic.

An online search will disclose some complaints about both Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses and a queen or king memory foam mattress from almost any other company. When looking for mattresses for sale, the consumer is advised to shop wisely and compare before buying a king memory foam mattress. You may find a real bargain or another problem.

There is no doubt that most of the people using memory foam mattresses are quite satisfied and would never go back to their queen or king coil mattress.

Join them and enjoy more restful, refreshing sleep on a memory foam mattress.

The finest mattress topper in all probability is not the style you thought it was. For ages many of us have thought that we needed a firm or an extra firm mattress. All of the advertisements talked about how their mattress supplied us the support we needed. As a result we automatically thought that the more support built into our mattresses, the better it was for us. So we went to the local sleep shop, tested the mattresses and selected the one which provided us the most support. And, after all, extra support means a firmer mattress.

Sadly, more stiff support does not necessarily mean improved support. That's because not all of us need the same degree or type of support during the time we're sleeping. Some folks rest on their backs, some on their stomachs and a variety of us sleep on our sides. Every position needs a bed with a distinct amount of firmness so as to be comfortable.

Select the best kind and amount of support for your individual sleep type, and you'll get a very good nights rest and get up refreshed, ready to sort out a new day. Pick the unsuitable foundation and you awaken to a morning that starts the day with a sore back along with aching joints. Purchasing the right bed in the beginning is always the best thing to do but adding the appropriate mattress topper to your existing bed can vastly enhance your sleep experience without a huge outlay of cash.

Choose the best kind and quantity of support for your individual sleep style, and you'll get an excellent nights sleep and wake up refreshed, able to tackle a new day. Choose the wrong foundation and you wake up to a morning that starts your day with a painful back and painful joints. Buying the proper mattress at first is always the perfect thing to do but adding the best mattress topper to your present mattress can vastly improve your sleeping experience with out a big expenditure of money.

There are various mattress toppers available and deciding on the best one for you is often nearly as bewildering as purchasing the mattress was. They are available in a wide choice of shell materials in a wide price range. You need not be too concerned about the material type or color so long as it can provide some degree of durability. It is going to, after all, be covered by the sheets. It is the fill materials in the bed topper that is important.
